Meet the Team
-

Marc Sazer - President
Originally from Los Angeles, I grew up in a musical family, in a household filled with the joy and love of music. Our family also valued social justice, political activism and contributing to community. This has all led to our 47Forward team - we are musician/leaders, committed to Local 47. We have big goals for our Local. First, we need to stabilize our finances and ensure the long-term fiscal health of Local 47. This can’t be accomplished in one single year; only a multi-year approach can bring our Local onto a solid financial footing.
One thing is clear - achieving all of our goal will take teamwork. We have assembled an amazing group of Officers, Trustees and Directors, representing a tremendous variety of workplace experience and life experience. Moments of challenge and crisis call for leadership, and our leadership will be rooted in teamwork. My own history of activism is based deeply in committee work - bargaining committees, organizing committees, AFM Convention committees, political engagement in Sacramento and Washington D.C. and more. And, my lifelong experience with chamber music as a violinist has given me a visceral understanding of how collaboration and dialogue lead to success. We will all benefit by bringing different ideas and approaches to the table, building good policy together as a team.

John Acosta - Vice President
John Acosta is a New York-born, Los Angeles-based musician, composer, producer, and internationally recognized labor advocate. Originally from the Bronx, John was deeply influenced by his father, Juan Acosta a Cuban percussionist who toured with Latin jazz legends including Tito Puente and Celia Cruz. This musical foundation set the stage for a career that would span both creative and labor leadership roles.

Gail Kruvand - Secretary & Treasurer
I believe in collective action, and I believe in our union.
Decades as a professional bassist in New York, a member of the ICSOM Governing Board and several New York City Opera Orchestra negotiating committees have informed my understanding of leadership. Most recently, you trusted me as your Secretary/Treasurer since 2023 which has given me a perspective from inside the operations of our Local. My studies through the Cornell University Advanced Union Leadership program and an additional certification in Labor Studies have been key to understanding the role of both leadership and listening. I was an elected Delegate to the AFM Convention representing Local 47 and had previously served on the Local 802 Executive Board and Delegate to the Convention.
Trustees
-

Steve Dress - Trustee & Alternate AFM Convention Delegate
I am a freelance bass player working in recording and live performance in Los Angeles and have done so for the last 25 years. During that time I have learned the success of Local 47 is crucial to the success of Los Angeles musicians. Our community depends on a strong Local. I am looking forward to the opportunity to help Local 47 focus on and strengthen essentials such as administering and negotiating contracts, healthcare, and the financial foundation.
-

Alex Iles - Trustee
I am a freelance/studio musician and educator. I am active both as a live and recording musician. I have extensive professional experience working under many Union contracts, from the pit orchestras of numerous Los Angeles productions of Broadway shows to hundreds of television and motion picture soundtracks, to live TV productions and numerous sound recordings. I am a tenured musician in two orchestras, and sub in many others. I have served on numerous orchestra committees and AFM campaigns over the years. I also served on the board of directors of the LA chapter of RMA for 5 years.
I think this is a critical time for all professional musicians, Local 47 members in particular. I look forward enthusiastically to the opportunity to serve my family of fellow musicians, representing all our members to move local 47 forward.

We need to build our membership and provide vibrant and inspiring leadership. Musicians deserve to work under Freelance, Recording, Orchestral and Theater agreements. What will it take for our employers to hire LA Musicians? We need innovative solutions. We bought our beautiful Burbank headquarters in 2017, but it is now financially unsustainable. We must make difficult sacrifices and changes.
